Matthew D. Bird
I am an Associate Professor at the Universidad del Pacífico Graduate School in Lima, Peru, where I hold the DRC Research Chair on Migration and Forced Displacement. I also serve as a Researcher at Universidad del Pacífico Research Center (CIUP) and as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Refugee Studies. Previously, I was a visiting researcher at the Latin American Centre at Oxford University and with the Global Poverty Research Center at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.
Prior to joining Universidad del Pacífico, I served as a Research Director for the Advanced Leadership Initiative at Harvard University and a Research Associate at Harvard Business School. While at HBS, I authored over 50 cases and teaching notes on strategy, innovation, and change management in the consumer goods, finance, telecommunications, and healthcare sectors. I received my Ph.D. in Human Development from the University of Chicago, where I examined cultural influences on economic behavior — an interest sparked by my experience working as a management consultant in Spain.
I collaborated on projects with governments, foundations, and multilateral organizations including the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), World Food Programme, Sparkassen Stiftung, International Red Cross, Sesame Street Workshop, and the national governments of Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, and Uganda.
My research has received funding from the Ford Foundation, the Gates Foundation, National Science Foundation, Fulbright-Hays, the National Institute of Mental Health, Citi Foundation, and Innovations for Poverty Action.
